Zaara: LGBTQI Student Leaders

There were moments in my early school years when I felt unseen as a transwoman. Being called by the wrong name or pronouns made me realize that not all schools were fully prepared to support diverse identities. Those experiences were painful, but they strengthened my understanding of how important respect, recognition, and safe spaces are in education.

At Zamboanga Peninsula Polytechnic State University, I began to experience positive change. Through the efforts of Prof. Mary Fe M. Dela Cruz, the GAD Director and supportive faculty members, conversations about inclusivity and gender sensitivity became stronger. Their commitment to creating a more respectful and inclusive campus environment made me feel seen and valued. Because of this growing support system, I was inspired to establish UNLA Mascara Gender and Development Organization, where I serve as both Founder and President. What started as personal challenges became a platform for advocacy, visibility, and empowerment for LGBTQI students.

Inclusive education gave me confidence and strengthened my voice as both a student and a leader. When educators and administrators actively promote respect and equality, it allows students like me to participate freely and focus on academic and personal growth without fear of discrimination.

Zaara Rinrada D. Althani is a graduating student of Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, major in Entrepreneurship, at Zamboanga Peninsula Polytechnic State University. She is a proud transwoman and the Founder and President of UNLA Mascara Gender and Development Organization, advocating for equality, diversity, and safe spaces for LGBTQIA students.
